The FCA's AI live testing initiative
THE WHO2 GLOBAL VIEW
The FCA’s AI Live Testing initiative is worth paying attention to.
Not because it gives the market permission to use AI. Because it starts to show what “good” looks like when AI is already live in real insurance workflows.
From what Avantia shared following its involvement, the message feels pretty clear:
The FCA is not saying “don’t use AI”.
It is saying:
Use it, but prove you are in control of it.
That is the important bit.
The focus does not seem to be on who has the most advanced model or the most impressive technology. It is much more practical than that.
Can you explain the decision?
Can a human override it?
Can you evidence the customer outcome?
Can you monitor drift, bias and performance over time?
Do you understand the data feeding the model?
And if something goes wrong, who is actually accountable?
For me, this is where the insurance market needs to get sharper.
AI is not just a technology conversation. It is now an operating model conversation.
It touches:
Pricing governance
Claims handling
Customer triage
Advice journeys
Placement recommendations
Consumer Duty
Data quality
Audit trails
Platform design
Supplier oversight
That means insurers, MGAs, brokers and software providers all need to think differently. You cannot bolt AI onto broken processes and call it innovation. You cannot have black-box recommendations with no audit trail. And you definitely cannot have AI influencing customer outcomes without clear governance, controls and human accountability.
The opportunity is still massive.
But the winners will not just be the firms that move fastest. They will be the firms that can move fast and evidence control.
That is the shift.
AI READINESS IS NOT JUST ABOUT TECHNOLOGY
It is about governance, data, workflow, accountability and customer outcomes all working together.
And for insurance, that is probably a good thing.
